What is Bupleurum Root Extract?

Bupleurum Root Extract is an active ingredient extracted from the dried roots of the Umbelliferae plant Bupleurum or Bupleurum angustifolia, in the form of fine brown powder. The main components of this extract include saikosaponins, as well as phytosterols, calendulol and a small amount of volatile oil. Saikosaponins have a variety of pharmacological effects, including antipyretic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, liver-protective, lipid-lowering, and anticonvulsant. It is often used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat symptoms such as colds, influenza, acute bronchitis, and liver dysfunction.

Extraction Method

Immersion method
Use appropriate solvent (at room temperature or low temperature to soak Chinese herbal medicine. This method is suitable for the extraction of heat-sensitive Chinese herbal medicine components, because organic solvents can prevent volatile oils from volatilizing with water vapor, and low temperature helps to maintain the original saponin structure.

Alcohol precipitation method
The active ingredients in Chinese herbal medicines are easily soluble in organic solvents, and these ingredients can be separated by alcohol precipitation. Before alcohol precipitation, the raw materials usually need to be decocted first, then the extract is concentrated, and finally alcohol precipitation is performed at low temperature. The yield of this method is closely related to the concentration density, and the density of the extract needs to be precisely controlled.

Reflux method
In industrial production, the hot reflux method is widely used to extract saikosaponins. This method involves the use of 69% ethanol as a solvent , the solid-liquid ratio is 1:20 (g/ml), and refluxed at 61°C for 2.5 hours. The extraction efficiency of this method is affected by many factors, such as extraction time, temperature, solvent concentration, solid-liquid ratio and pH value.

Macroporous resin extraction technology
Macroporous resin is a non-ionic organic polymer adsorption material with a good network structure and a large specific surface area. Through this method, saikosaponin can be effectively adsorbed and eluted, thereby achieving the purification and separation of the extract.

Microwave method
Microwave extraction technology uses microwave rays to make polar substances (such as water molecules) in plant cells absorb microwave energy, causing cell walls to break, thereby releasing the active ingredients and dissolving them in the solvent. Under the conditions of microwave power of 360~400 w, ethanol concentration of 47~50%, temperature of 73~74°C, and time of 5.8~6.0 min, the yield of saikosaponin is as high as more than 90%.
