What is Silybin?

Silybin Powder is a flavonolignan compound isolated from the seeds of the purple thistle plant of the Asteraceae family. The main active ingredients are four isomers, namely silybin, isosilybin, silybin and silybinin. It can prevent damage to the liver caused by chemical toxins, food toxins and drugs, promote the regeneration and repair of liver cells, and is known as a "natural liver protector". Among them, silybin is the most common and biologically active substance, which has multiple beneficial effects such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-fibrotic, anti-viral and cell protection.

Pharmacological effects

Repairing liver cells: It can protect liver cells through various mechanisms. By binding to liver cell membrane proteins, it inhibits lipid peroxidation and stabilizes membrane permeability, helping the liver maintain its own synthesis level of protective substances and preventing damage caused by various toxic chemicals.

Scavenging free radicals and anti-oxidation: It can quickly remove highly reactive free radicals such as hydroxyl (OH) by direct or indirect means, reduce or eliminate the inhibitory effect of OH on antioxidant enzymes, and inhibit lipid peroxidation, reducing the content of membrane peroxidation products such as malondialdehyde. In addition, it can inhibit oxidative stress by reducing tissue reactive oxygen species (ROS). Studies have shown that silybin can directly reduce ROS levels by activating the Nrf2 pathway, reducing its oxidative damage to the liver.

Anti-fibrosis: It can significantly inhibit the proliferation and migration of hepatic stellate cells, reduce liver cell damage and reverse the process of liver fibrosis. In addition, it can also inhibit transforming growth factor pathways such as TGF-β1/Smads, reduce the expression of related proteins, and significantly reduce the level of liver fibrosis.

Anti-inflammatory: It can significantly inhibit the activation of NF-κB, reduce the overexpression of downstream interleukin-6 (IL-6) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), alleviate the MASH inflammatory response, and thus improve liver function. In addition, it can also exert its anti-inflammatory effect through multiple pathways such as restoring NAD+ levels, inhibiting PARP activity and the production of IL-1β inflammatory factors.

Mechanism of liver protection

It can inhibit the proliferation and migration of hepatic stellate cells, reduce the synthesis of extracellular matrix, and exert anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the phosphorylation of ERK, MEK and Raf.

It inhibits the synthesis of inflammatory factors and the activation of intracellular inflammatory signaling pathways.

It activates peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α and reduces lipid accumulation in the liver. It also improves lipid metabolism imbalance by regulating the expression of genes related to lipid metabolism.
