What is Phenprobamate?

The chemical name of Phenprobamate is 3-phenyl-1-propanol carbamate. It is a white, shiny crystalline powder with a melting point between 101-104°C. It is soluble in ethanol, chloroform, propylene glycol and ethylenediamine, slightly soluble in ether, and almost insoluble in water. It is a centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxant with additional sedative and anticonvulsant effects. Overdose is similar to barbiturates. Its mechanism of action may be similar to that of meprobamate. It is used in humans as an antianxiety drug and is sometimes still used for general anesthesia and treatment of muscle cramps and spasms. It is mainly used clinically to treat primary generalized epilepsy, limb tendinitis, ligament injury, myalgia, neuralgia and rheumatoid arthritis.
