What is HPR?

Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate, referred to as HPR, is an advanced retinol derivative and belongs to the third generation of vitamin A (VA) derivatives. It is formed by esterification of retinoic acid and small molecule pinacol. Unlike other retinoic acid derivatives, it retains the functional group of retinoic acid and does not need to be converted into retinoic acid. It can directly act on retinoic acid receptors to play a role. Its anti-aging effect is similar to that of all-trans retinoic acid. This article will introduce some of its advantages in use.

It is an ester formed by combining retinoic acid with pinacol. This structure makes it highly efficient in conversion in the skin, low in irritation, and highly stable. Therefore, HPR is a more stable and gentler substitute for retinoic acid and can be used in the cosmetic field.

High efficiency
The structure determines its high efficiency. It changes the active group of A acid and converts the structure into a combination of A acid molecule + pinacol, which means that it has both the efficacy of A alcohol and the advantages of A ester.
Its structure allows this ingredient to jump out of the traditional A-type derivative conversion chain (ester→alcohol→aldehyde), and the conversion step to A acid is shorter, and it binds to the retinol receptor RAR faster.

High temperature and resistance
At the same concentration as A alcohol, it does not cause skin redness and discomfort in a 24-hour patch test, and has low irritation, while 0.5% concentration of A alcohol causes skin redness. More suitable for skin that is intolerant to traditional A.

Data shows that it has 94% of its ingredients left in 3 months and 82% left in 16 months; in contrast, there is no stock of Retinol at 16 months.
