Product Introduction

What is D-panthenol?

D-panthenol is a derivative of vitamin B5, also known as provitamin B5. Vitamin B5 is pantothenic acid. Its properties are unstable and easily affected by temperature and formula, causing its bioavailability to decrease. Therefore, its precursor, panthenol, is often used in cosmetic formulas. Panthenol exists in three forms: dextrorotary body (D-form), left-handed body (L-form) and mixed body (DL-form). Among them, dexpanthenol (D-panthenol) has a higher Biologically active, D-panthenol is mainly used in the cosmetics industry.

Panthenol is a colorless, transparent liquid with a certain viscosity and a slight special smell. Compared with vitamin B5 or pantothenic acid, panthenol is more stable in nature. Its molecular weight is only 205. It can effectively penetrate into the stratum corneum and quickly convert into vitamin B5. The latter is an essential part of the body's metabolism and is responsible for the synthesis of coenzyme A. important raw materials. Coenzyme A is a cofactor for various enzyme reaction pathways in the body. It participates in cellular energy metabolism and supplies energy for the body's life activities. In addition, it also participates in the metabolism of various key components in the skin, such as the synthesis of cholesterol, fatty acids and sphingolipids. wait.

Therefore, panthenol has been widely used in the pharmaceutical, food and cosmetics industries. In the food industry, panthenol can be used as a nutritional supplement and fortifier; the topical use of panthenol on the skin began in 1944 and has a history of more than 70 years. It mainly plays the role of moisturizing, soothing and repairing in cosmetics.

It is the precursor of vitamin B5 and is widely found in most foods of plant and animal origin. Panthenol can penetrate into the stratum corneum and be converted into pantothenic acid, which can then synthesize coenzyme A and promote the metabolism of protein, fat and sugar in the human body. Panthenol has moisturizing and anti-aging effects on the skin, promotes normal keratinization of the skin, promotes wound healing, and has anti-inflammatory effects.

What are the benefits for the skin?

Hydrates and improves barrier

The intercellular lipids in the stratum corneum are an important structure in maintaining the barrier function of the skin. The latest research has found that the arrangement of intercellular lipids in the stratum corneum of dry skin is different, and it is in a rigid environment with poor fluidity.

Panthenol, because it has hygroscopic and water-retaining properties, promotes lipid synthesis and increases the fluidity of lipid molecules and keratin microfilaments, it can improve the rigid environment between stratum corneum cells and help maintain healthy skin. Barrier skin care benefits.

Research results from Vicèhu Laboratory in Switzerland show that using products containing panthenol on healthy skin can effectively increase the moisture content of the stratum corneum, and there is a certain dose-effect relationship.

In addition, after surfactants destroy the skin barrier function, using panthenol-containing products can effectively reduce transepidermal water loss and improve the skin barrier function.

Soothing

The soothing effect of D-panthenol powder mainly comes from two aspects.

On the one hand, ubiquinol protects against oxidative stress damage. Cells will produce reactive oxygen free radicals under the action of internal and external stress factors. When cells have insufficient scavenging capacity for free radicals, the accumulated free radicals will have adverse effects on skin health and aging. Panthenol at this time can reduce the production of reactive oxygen free radicals in skin cells, and at the same time upregulate the skin's own antioxidant mechanism, including inducing skin cells to express more antioxidant factors - heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1 ), thereby improving the skin’s antioxidant capacity.

On the other hand, panthenol can reduce the inflammatory response of the skin, inhibit the release of inflammatory factors, thereby reducing the inflammatory response, and effectively improve a variety of sensitive skin symptoms, including dry skin, roughness, scales, itching, erythema, chapped, etc. .

Promote repair

Skin damage repair is a complex process, which mainly includes four stages: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation and remodeling.

After micro-surgery, the skin will be damaged. The use of products containing panthenol can effectively promote the regeneration of the skin epidermis, promote the proliferation and differentiation of epidermal cells, and accelerate the repair of epidermal damage caused by laser. At the same time, filaggrin, an important marker of keratinocyte differentiation and barrier function, also increased significantly, indicating that ubiquinol has an excellent functional effect in promoting skin barrier repair.

Moisturizing

Pure panthenol has a small molecular weight and can effectively penetrate the stratum corneum and infiltrate the stratum corneum on the surface of the skin. It has a strong moisturizing effect, effectively improves rough skin, and makes the skin soft and non-sticky.

Repair

Stimulates the growth of epithelial cells, accelerates the healing time of epidermal wounds, and repairs tissue wounds; it is effective in treating eczema, sunburn, and baby diaper rash. There are reports in the literature: Ointment containing 5% panthenol can speed up the healing time of epidermal wounds by 30%.

Fight skin inflammation

Pure Panthenol can inhibit the release of inflammatory factors, thereby reducing the inflammatory response and soothing skin sensitivity. Experimental studies have shown that after using capsaicin to stimulate keratinocytes, the release of inflammatory factors IL-6 and IL-8 was significantly increased. After using ubiquinol, the release of inflammatory factors IL-6 and IL-8 was effectively inhibited. , indicating that ubiquinol can inhibit the release of inflammatory factors.

Experimental test

FLÁVIO B of the University of São Paulo conducted a study in which 0.5%, 1.0%, and 5.0% panthenol were added to the formula and applied to the forearms of healthy subjects every day, and then the skin moisture content and transepidermal moisture were tested after 15 and 30 days. Transepidermal Waterloss (TWEL). During the test, the subjects can take a bath normally, but cannot use skin care products on their arms.

Figure 1 Changes in water content of the stratum corneum after using the product for 15 and 30 days (* represents a significant difference)

As shown in Figure 1, after 15 and 30 days of use, all products can increase the moisture content of the skin's stratum corneum, and the effect of the formula containing panthenol is more obvious.

2.webp

Figure 2 Changes in TEWL after using the product for 15 and 30 days (* represents a significant difference)

As shown in Figure 2, the transepidermal water loss (TEWL) test results showed that the formulas adding 1.0% and 5.0% panthenol significantly improved the skin barrier function, that is, the TEWL values were significantly reduced after 15 and 30 days of use.

3.webp

Figure 3 Changes in water content (A) and TEWL (B) of the stratum corneum before SLES washing, after SLES washing for 5 days and after using the product for 2 hours (★ represents significantly higher; • represents significantly lower)

As shown in Figure 3, after 5 days of continuous skin washing with SLES (sodium laureth sulfate), the water content of the skin's stratum corneum significantly decreased and TEWL increased significantly. The TEWL values were significantly reduced using formulations containing 1.0% and 5.0% panthenol. Therefore, the SLES wash test showed that when skin barrier function changes, formulas containing 1.0% and 5.0% panthenol can significantly reduce transepidermal water loss.

Summary: Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) value is the main parameter for non-invasive and objective detection of skin barrier function. It is also one of the important parameters for the efficacy evaluation of moisturizing cosmetics. It is often used to evaluate the repair efficacy of skin care products. Using a formula containing panthenol can increase the moisture content of the stratum corneum (i.e., panthenol has a moisturizing effect) and improve the skin barrier by reducing TEWL (i.e., panthenol has a repairing effect). 1.0% panthenol already has a good skin barrier improvement function, so it can be used in skin care products to maintain the physiological condition of the skin and prevent skin dryness, because the loss of water may adversely affect the appearance of the skin and lead to skin disorders.
