What is Ceramide Powder?
Ceramide powder, also known as sphingolipids, is a type of lipid present in the skin and plays an important role in the formation of the epidermal stratum corneum. There are many types of ceramides present in the intercellular lipids of the stratum corneum (SC), with contents as high as 50%. Ceramide is an inherent component of the human body and functions as a skin barrier. It can not only prevent the invasion of harmful substances, but also prevent the outward loss of skin moisture. Ceramides, like polypeptides, are a very large category, and current research has found that there are 16 subtypes. Common ceramides on the market include ceramide NP, AP, EOP, NS and other ceramides.
The basic structure of ceramide:
From a chemical structure point of view, sphingosine is connected to a fatty acid at the amine position to form ceramide (alcohol and acid form ester).
However, since sphingosine can have different molecular compositions and different fatty acids can be combined with sphingosine, ceramide molecules are not unique, it refers to a class of molecules (there are also different ceramides used in skin care products). To date, more than 300 types of ceramides have been found in the human body. Although they were first discovered in the nervous system, they are particularly widely distributed in the skin (there are 11 types of ceramides in the skin).

What effect does ceramide have on the skin?
(1) Barrier repair and anti-allergy
Ceramides in the stratum corneum of the skin combine with cholesterol and fatty acids to form a dense lipid bilayer molecular membrane to resist external stimuli. Ceramides play a leading role in regulating the skin barrier function, helping to strengthen the stratum corneum and protect against harmful external substances. Invasion and reduce the occurrence of allergies.
Experiments have proven that topical use of a certain amount of naturally synthesized Ceramide NP Powder can restore the loss of skin barrier function caused by the use of organic solvents and surfactants, and therefore has a good anti-allergic effect on skin protection.
(2) Moisturizing effect
Ceramide NP Powder is both hydrophilic and lipophilic, giving it a strong "unity effect": it can combine with cholesterol and fatty acids to form a dense double-layer molecular membrane. Experiments have found that after lipid damage to the skin's stratum corneum causes chapped skin, ceramide plays a leading role in restoring skin moisture. It can effectively associate with water molecules and form a network structure to maintain skin moisture.
(3) Adhesion effect
Pure ceramide powder can be linked to cell surface proteins through lipids, which can enhance the adhesion between keratinocytes, thereby reducing the occurrence of dryness and desquamation. This is the unique effect of ceramide. If ceramide is missing, the firmness of the adhesion of keratinocytes will be greatly reduced, resulting in dry and desquamated skin (without adhering keratinocytes).
Because ceramide can nail every cell together like a nail, it is also called a "molecular nail."
(4) Anti-aging
As age increases, the ceramide content in the skin will gradually decrease. Without more of the "adhesive" of skin keratinocytes, the skin will gradually become dry, flaky, and rough, so the skin's stratum corneum becomes thinner and its elasticity decreases, resulting in the appearance of wrinkle.
Ceramides can not only improve the water-holding capacity of the skin, but also play an adhesive role in reducing the shedding of the stratum corneum, increasing the thickness of the stratum corneum, and thereby improving the elasticity of the skin.
What problems does a lack of ceramide NP cause?
If the skin lacks ceramides, a channel will open between the internal skin and the external environment. Dust and bacteria will easily invade the skin, and the good bottom layer of the skin may be easily destroyed. The specific manifestations of the lack of ceramides in the skin , will also cause many skin problems. If the skin barrier is not strong enough, moisture cannot be locked in, and bacteria and other harmful substances cannot be resisted, which may cause the following skin problems:
Dermatitis (including hormone facial)
Psoriasis, eczema, redness
Sensitive skin, dry skin, rough skin,
In these problem skins, the ceramide content is significantly lower than in normal skin.
In addition to the natural aging of the skin, which will reduce ceramides, ceramides will also change with the changes of seasons. In cold winter and dry spring, its content in the skin will be less than in other seasons. This is why people spend more time in spring. One of the reasons why skin becomes rough and dry.
What causes ceramide deficiency?
Various factors that affect the metabolism of the skin surface will further affect the synthesis of ceramides, thereby further damaging the skin barrier, eventually leading to the loss and deficiency of ceramides, and making the skin enter a sub-healthy state.
(1) Problem skin: Skin diseases will affect endogenous ceramide synthesis, and usually the skin barrier function will also be damaged at this time.
(2) Natural aging: Unavoidable natural aging, ceramides will gradually decrease with age, resulting in dryness, wrinkles and other problems.
(3) Environmental factors: cold, dryness, strong sunlight, seasonal changes, etc., can easily cause the reduction of ceramides. Therefore, moisturizing and sunscreen are eternal laws in the skin care industry.
(4) Physical factors: Excessive use of scrubs, facial cleansers, paper towels, etc. to clean and wipe the skin will cause mechanical damage to the skin barrier.
(5) Excessive skin care: Excessive cleaning, frequent exfoliation, frequent makeup removal, etc. will all lead to the loss of intercellular lipids to a certain extent.
(6) Drug effects: Some fairies may use hormonal drugs for a long time to remove acne or solve other skin problems, and some drugs that inhibit the proliferation of epidermal cells will lead to a decrease in ceramide synthesis during medication.
(7) Mental emotions: Staying up late, being nervous or under stress will cause the skin to deteriorate, produce more oil, and become prone to peeling and sensitivity. At this time, the synthesis of ceramide in the human body will also be affected.
(8) Bad habits: For example, frequent hot baths and high-temperature rinsing will overly dissolve the oil components in the skin, and ceramide, one of the components, will also accelerate the loss.
What are the sources of ceramides?
There are three main ways to obtain ceramide:
(1) Natural extraction
ceramide powder bulk can be extracted from animals or plants. Extracts from animal sources are almost never used in skin care products due to the risk of immunogens and pathogenicity. At present, a small number of skin care products use ceramide extracted from plants, but due to low yield, its application is subject to certain restrictions.
(2) Chemical synthesis
The main ones prepared by chemical synthesis are ceramides, which have similar structures and functions to ceramides. Most ceramides in skin care products are artificially synthesized, and currently there are six types that can be synthesized.
(3) Microbial fermentation
Microbial fermentation is a commonly used method for preparing ceramide in recent years, that is, using Pichia pastoris or Saccharomyces cerevisiae to ferment under certain conditions, and further obtain phytosphingosine, and finally add fatty acids to synthesize ceramide substances.
There are 11 common ceramides in the ingredient list of skin care products. The corresponding representation of the old and new names is for reference only:
①Ceramide 1 = Ceramide EOS
②Ceramide 2 = Ceramide NS = N-Stearoyl Sphingosine
③Ceramide 3 = Ceramide NP = N-Stearoyl Phytosphingosine
④Ceramide 4 = Ceramide EOH
⑤Ceramide 5 = Ceramide AS
⑥Ceramide 6 = Ceramide AP = α-hydroxy-N-stearoyl-phytosphingosine
⑦Ceramide 6 ll = Sphingosine
⑧Ceramide 7 = Ceramide AH
⑨Ceramide 8 = Ceramide NH
⑩Ceramide 9 = Ceramide EOP
⑪Ceramide E = Cetyl-PG Hydroxyethyl Palmitamide
The difference between ceramide and nicotinamide
Niacinamide, another magical ingredient in the skin care industry, is so similar to ceramide in name. What is their origin?
Although both are "amides," ceramide and niacinamide are two different things.
Connection: "Amide" refers to a class of compounds containing the amide bond -CONH-, but not the same compound.
Although niacinamide and ceramide both have barrier repair, moisturizing, and anti-aging effects in the skin care industry, they have different mechanisms of action and focus on different effects:
Niacinamide: Known for its whitening effect by inhibiting melanin transport, it can effectively control oil and is more suitable for oily skin. Those who are oily on the outside and dry on the inside need to use it with hydrating products.
Ceramide: An important component of the intercellular lipids in the stratum corneum. It focuses on hydrating and repairing the skin barrier. It is more suitable for people with damaged skin and dehydrated skin.
