What is carbomer?

Carbomer powder, also known as carboxyvinyl, is a polymer formed by chemical cross-linking of acrylic acid or acrylate and allyl ether, including polyacrylic acid (homopolymer) and long-chain alkanol acrylate polymers (copolymer). Its molecular structure contains 52 to 68% acid groups, so it has a certain acidity, hydrophilic properties, and can be dissolved in water, ethanol and glycerol. It has been included in the 23rd edition of the United States Pharmacopoeia. It has been widely used in the development and production of drugs and cosmetics abroad. It is a multi-purpose polymer material and a promising pharmaceutical excipient.

Bulk carbomer is an organic compound obtained by inserting a C2 unit into the structure of other specific organic compounds to expand the molecule. It can be used as pharmaceutical excipients. In actual use, it usually needs to be dissolved before use. The following is its specific dissolution method.

Dissolution method

1 The commonly used method is the dissolution method the next day. If it is to be used the next day, soak it the day before. First add the carbomer to deionized water and dissolve it according to actual production requirements. No need to stir. Let the carbomer absorb water naturally. If there is no white powder on the surface, then add neutralizer (trolamine or sodium oxyoxide solution), adjust the pH value to about 7, use a high-speed disperser, and stir evenly at low speed.

2 Use a high-speed dispersing machine to dissolve and add according to the actual production ratio. There is no white powder in the dispersing machine. Add a neutralizing agent. After forming a gel, use a vacuum emulsifying pot to remove the air from the gel. Filter again and remove the undissolved carbomer.

Carbomer thickening mechanism

There are two main thickening mechanisms of carbomer, including neutralization thickening and hydrogen bonding thickening.


1. Neutralize and thicken

Since it contains certain acid groups, alkaline neutralization is required during application. After being neutralized by alkaline, the carboxyl groups of the carboxy resin are ionized. Due to the mutual repulsion of negative charges, the curled molecular chains stretch into a state of great expansion, increasing the original volume to about 1,000 times, thus causing to the thickening effect. In water and other polar solvents, neutralization with NaOH, KOH, NH40H, etc. can easily generate salts; in acute weak or non-acute solvents, organic amines must be used for neutralization. When resin is used as an emulsifier, in order to achieve stability of the oil/water emulsifier, the resin needs to be double neutralized with water-soluble inorganic bases and oil-soluble organic amines to generate salts that are soluble in both water and oil. Acts as a bridge between oil phase and water phase.

2.Hydrogen bond thickening

As a carboxyl donor, carbomer molecules can combine with one or more hydroxyl groups to form hydrogen bonds and thicken. This reaction mechanism takes time. Commonly used hydroxyl donors include nonionic surfactants, polyols, etc.

1. Suspension. Can make insoluble components permanently suspended in the system.

2. Emulsification. Carbomer Powder can emulsify and stabilize in oil or water phase.

3. Thickening. Able to produce a wide range of viscosities and fluidities.

One method is to add carbomer to the oil phase system to slow down the swelling rate, which is the so-called indirect method. But this depends on the formula. Carbopol is not very sensitive to changes in the addition process.

Used in skin care products

Bulk carbomer is a hydrophilic thickener, stable emulsifier, suspending agent, and gel. It has good transparency and needs to maintain a medium to weakly alkaline consistency, so it cannot coexist with acidic skin rejuvenating ingredients. In addition, Carbomer is also afraid of salts. , so mineral ions cannot be added, otherwise the consistency will disappear and it will be irritating to the eye mucosa. For high molecular polymers, the larger the number followed (such as Carbomer 940), the larger the polymer molecule. Second, as a formulation of external drugs, it can be used as a carrier matrix to make ointments, suppositories, gels, lotions, etc.
